Enterprise Web 2.0 – My 2006 prediction

The real evolution of Web 2.0 will come when startups go after the enterprise space again. There’s a screaming need for the innovations that we’re seeing on the consumer side to be applied there.

  • Why isn’t my ecommerce experience as cool as my maps experience?
  • Why isn’t someone doing a mashup of my contact list in the CRM and Google Maps?
  • Where is my AJAX Shopping cart?

The real shame is that VCs are still on the consumer kick and aren’t funding enterprise startups now. I’ve had a friend of mine need to change the focus of his company from being an enterprise company to spin it somehow into a consumer play in order to get funding. It’s sad because it’s a great idea that isn’t getting the shot that it deserves.

My bet is that by mid 2007 when we start seeing the results of overinvestment on the consumer side that Web 2.0 enterprise startups will be the hot ticket.
