Survey of Web 2.0 Technologies in Enterprises
Dennis McDonald has a really interesting project - he is surveying IT departments to see how they are adopting Web 2.0 technologies. This is a fascinating idea and based on my previous post about Enterprise Web 2.0 being the next hot thing I'm VERY curious to hear what his results are.
My problem with his survey is that he is considering Web 2.0 technologies to be blogs, wikis and podcasts. I think this is a big mistake.
What about all the APIs and mashups that are now available? I'm very curious to know if a Fortune 500 company would want to do a mashup of say their logistics system into Google Maps.
Thanks for the mention!
My focus on "blogs, podcasts and wikis" is intentional. This scoping of the current survey is designed to focus on collaborative and interactive content management technologies that are directly relevant to customers, as opposed to "developer oriented" tools such as API's and mash-ups. In future efforts I intend to focus more on the development side of Web 2.0. Stay tuned!

Chris, I would love to see server-side Enterprise Web 2.0 technology adoption data...

Ah, Chris -- "server side" data, that's obviously critical. Where might one go for any server-side adoption data for any technology? Are there surveys or reporting services that already regularly provide statistics on applications that are currently running, say, on Apache servers in companies of size x, of size y, of size z, etc.? Is that the type of thing you're looking for?

Dennis - I think that your survey is definitely interesting and I bet folks over at Socialtext and Jotspot will be very interested in your resutls. I don't mean to dissuade you in anyway from what you're doing!
As long as you're talking to CIOs though I think that it would be easy to ask questions along the lines of:
- would you consider using a webservice from Google to help enhance your site?
- what % of your applications need to be inhouse vs. hosted at another place (like Salesforce)
Those are the questions off the top of my head but I'm sure there are others I'm missing!
